TRAVEL DIARY: Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima, Japan.

This was my favourite place I visited while travelling in Japan, or rather the island of Miyajima off Hiroshima was my favourite. The whole island is just gorgeous, from the shoreline to the touristy streets, from the wild deer (they were everywhere!) to the temples and mountains. This place is stunning!

The whole time I was there it was dark and stormy, but I feel like that just added to the atmosphere.

and no matter how gorgeous the island was, the reason of course to travel there was always going to be the Itsukushima shrine, or the floating temple, which is a Shinto shrine that, at high tide, is like an absolute dream.

I visited twice. Once in the afternoon at low tide, when the temple looks as if it is perched on a sand bank, and the next time at high tide in the morning. The second visit was incredible, as the water was high and made the whole place look as if it floats on the surface of the ocean, and also because it was less crowded, giving the whole shrine a beautiful peaceful atmosphere.

If you ever get the opportunity to visit this special place, I’d say it is definitely worth it! Or have you been there already?
