TRAVEL DIARY: A giant’s heartbeat

New Zealand.

If you ever travel to Queenstown in New Zealand’s South Island, you will see a stunning lake.

And if you do a single tourist activity in that same area you can be sure you will hear a fascinating and ancient story about that lake.

You see, the lake is a lake, yet it is also tidal, which stumped people for a long time.

The Maori people say that a giant sleeps at the bottom, and the tide is the slow beat of the giant’s heart beneath the water… beat, beat, beat.

I always loved that story.
