This writing update post covers what I did in November for my writing, and also my goals for December 2020. 🙂
NOVEMBER WRITING ROUND UP!
I am trying something a little bit new, which will be a way for me to keep track of my goals and writing progress. I feel like it is good for me to track this stuff, if only so I can look back and see things slowly taking shape. I have a bad habit of aiming for rather crazy goals in terms of my writing progress, and then instead of feeling happy and proud of everything I did achieve, I instead feel sad I didn’t quite make it to my wished for ideal destination … which is a very silly approach, haha.
So here is what I achieved this month in terms of my writing! 🙂
NOVEMBER 2020 ROUND UP:
In hindsight I actually got a lot done during November, which is very encouraging!
I finished my first rough draft for the second book in my JOSEON DETECTIVE series, which will be called AN ODE TO HUNGRY GHOSTS. I managed to get the first draft of 95k words done in 9 weeks, which I know some writers will think is fast, and others will think is slow, haha. In truth, everyone works at a very different pace, and that is completely okay. We all just have to figure out what works best for us!
The most interesting thing for me about my process while writing this book, is that it was one of my first attempts at very strict chapter by chapter plotting. I am more of a discovery writer (which means I like to make things up as I go along, haha!) but as this story is a very twisty plot-driven mystery, I had to really work hard at plotting to make sure the story worked! I think it has worked😱. Fingers crossed. It is being beta read now, so we will see 🙂
The book follows my damo detective protagonist, called Dan Ji, as she investigates another creepy and dark crime in Joseon Korea. This time, she is stationed in the northern city of Pyongyang, right at the cusp of the Imjin War.
I am pretty proud and excited about this book, and look forward to sharing it in 2021 (hopefully around mid year). The first book in the series is already published, called A SONG FOR LONELY WOLVES 😻
DECEMBER WRITING GOALS!!
Here is my writing goals post for December 2020! (Also… I realised I never once took a photo of my Promise Series books together… which is weird 😹 so here they are, books 1 and 2 😻):
This month for my writing goals, I aim to get a few different things done. Like always, I aim too high, and potentially getting all this done will be completely impossible, but I figure I will try, and even if I don’t make it, at least trying to get it all done will hopefully have motivated me to work hard on my fiction 🙂
Finish final edits on the 3rd book in my PROMISE SERIES and send it to my editor! I aim to get this done by halfway through the month. The book is called PROMISE DREAM and follows the story of a gisaeng from the Korean Joseon dynasty. Her name is Jan-sil, and readers will recognise her as a side character in the first two books in this series. I am both very excited and very nervous to share this story (I am always nervous, haha!). It will be published in March 2021.
Finalise the edits from my editor on my PROMISE SERIES novella called BARLEY FIELDS, and, even though I don’t have the final cover yet (boohoo) give it out free to my lovely newsletter subscribers as an end of year gift, to say thank you for all the support this past year. 🙂 If you are interested in getting this one for free too, now is the perfect time to sign up for my newsletter:
Oh my gosh … this is where it gets lofty and crazy! I am hoping to begin work on the 4th book in my PROMISE SERIES, which will follow the story of a character called Seo-jin, and be the start of a kind of new connected trilogy about some side characters who have now grown up and get their own adventures and love stories.
I have a vague idea what this story is about, but really need to do some hardcore plotting to figure it all out!
Phew… that is a big workload ahead, but I guess I’ll check back in later to report how much I managed to do (or not, haha).
Wish me luck!! 🙂
